What To Wear To A Christmas Party -- Dress

What To Wear To A Christmas Party -- Veronica Dress

When Veronica saw this dress on the hanger, she knew this was the dress. She loved the color and shape. It reminds her of a retro dress from the 1950’s but updated for 2022.

Design Line & Color Analysis

Silhouette

Veronica learned that the first design line she should look at is the silhouette. It’s the outside line of the dress. The difference between the shoulders/waist, waist/hips and hips/shoulders. It comes in two different categories: angular and curved. A silhouette is angular when the shoulders, waist and hips appear to be the same width. On the other hand, a silhouette is curved when the waist is significantly smaller than both the shoulders and waist. Her Body Shape gives her clues as to which category to wear.

Veronica has an X Body Shape. Her waist is significantly smaller than both her shoulders and hips. Also, her shoulders and hips appear to be the same width. The transition at the waist is angular like an X as compared to an S Body Shape which is curved.

This dress has a curved silhouette perfect for Veronica.

Horizontal Lines

Veronica learned that horizontal lines are another design line she needs to consider. They stop the eye, emphasize the area and make it appear to be wider and shorter. Her Body Shape and Body Proportions give her clues as to the placement of horizontal lines.

Veronica learned that for a Body Shape one doesn’t want horizontal lines in their widest areas because they bring emphasis to this area and make it appear even wider. However when placed in the shoulders and/or waist, these areas are emphasized and make it appear wider which creates better balance with the wider area.

For Body Proportions, Veronica learned that one doesn’t want to place horizontal lines in short areas because it will make these areas appear even shorter. On the other hand, one does want them in long areas because horizontal lines will make this area appear shorter creating balance.

Veronica can place horizontal lines anywhere for her Body Shape because she doesn’t have one area wider than another. However, she does need to consider them for her Body Proportions. She is short between her bust/waist and waist/crotch; and is long between her crotch/knees and knees/floor. Overall her legs are significantly longer than her torso.

This dress has two horizontal lines: the neckline and dress hem. The neckline is just below Veronica’s shoulders and is a perfect spot for her because the length between her chin and bust is ideal. Also the fact that by wearing a dress one doesn’t know where the torso ends and legs begin the torso doesn’t look even shorter. The hem length is perfect. In fact, any hem length works great on her because it helps the legs appear shorter.

Vertical Lines

Veronica learned that vertical lines move the eye up and down, and makes the area appear thinner and taller. Her Body Shape and Body Proportions give her clues as to the placement of these design lines.

For Body Shapes in general, one does want vertical lines through the widest area because they move the eye away from the area and make them appear thinner. However, one doesn’t want them just in the thinnest areas because vertical lines make this area appear even thinner making the body appear even more out of balance.

For Body Proportions in general, one does whan vertical lines in short areas because they will make this area appear longer creating balance. However one doesn’t want them in just long areas because this area will appear even longer making it appear even more out of balance.

As with horizontal lines, Veronica learned she didn’t need to worry about vertical lines for her Body Shape, but did need to consider them for her Body Proportions. She wants them in her torso area to make it appear longer and wants to limit them in her leg area.

This dress has two princess lines going from mid-arm going down to the hem. These vertical lines work well for Veronica’s torso area making it appear longer. Because this is a dress and one can’t tell where the torso ends and legs begin, the legs don’t look longer.

Shape Of Design Lines

Veronica learned that her Face Shape gives her clues as to the shape of design lines. She finds design shapes in necklines, pockets, collars and cuffs along with accessories and prints. Design line shapes come in two categories: angular and curved. Angular design lines have angles while curved ones have no angles. Angular Face Shapes wear angular design lines and curved Face Shapes wear curved design lines.

Veronica learned she has a heart Face Shape which falls in the curved category.

This dress has two design line shapes: the neckline and print. Both have curved shapes which are perfect for Veronica.

Veronica learned horizontal lines are her friend by making her legs appear shorter.
