Accessory Shape — Evaluate Your Accessories

You can determine your best accessory shape by looking at your Body Elements.

I’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point on a woman’s outfit.                                                                                                                                              Michael Kors

Do you have an accessory you love to wear but like that one outfit you love to wear, you don’t know how to duplicate it?

Thus far I have only blogged about your 5 Body Elements in relation to your clothes. Your 5 Body Elements also give your clues about which accessories enhance your body.

In the next series of posts I will tell you how to:

  • Understand your body elements for accessories
  • Evaluate accessories
  • Determine if they match your body elements.

When I’m wearing the right accessory, it adds to my confidence. A couple weeks ago I found a necklace at Macy’s in their Last Act area. It’s one I hadn’t seen before. It had all the right elements that matched my body element clues. When I wore it for the first time, it elevated my confidence. I also got a ton of compliments.

Before we go any further, what items are considered accessories?

  • Jewelry
  • Shoes
  • Scarves
  • Handbags
  • Belts
  • Sock/tights/nylons

In this series of posts I will talk about the following in relations to accessories:

  • Shape
  • Horizontal Line Placement
  • Vertical Line Placement
  • Color
  • Color Combinations
  • Scale

This blog post will be all about accessory shape.

Body Elements - Face Shapes

The Body Element that gives you clues to accessory shape is your face shape. In my original post on face shape (How To Keep Your Feet From Resembling Olive Oyl’s Feet), you learned that your face shape gives you clues about the shape of:

  • Inside design lines
  • Prints
  • Accessories

Face shapes can be put into two different categories:

  • Angular
  • Curved

The shape of accessories can also be put into these same two categories. This means the shape of your accessories should be the same as your face shape. If you have an angular face then look for accessories with angular shapes or if your face shape is curved look for curved accessories.

For my first job out of college, I was an accountant. I had to wear pump heels. Very quickly I determined that I like angular shoe toes over curved ones.

Olive Oyl's feet don't match her face shape

Whenever I put on a curved toe pump I felt like I had Olive Oyl feet. My feet felt out of place and like they didn’t belong to my body.

But when I put on angular toe pumps it felt like Cinderella shoes. I felt like my feet belonged to my body.

It was years later that I learned this concept, accessories should have the same shape as my face. I have an angular shaped face.

Evaluate Your Accessories

Look at your accessories and pick out the one you love to wear or tend to wear the most in each category. Look at each one’s shape. Are they angular or curved? They might have both curved and angular shapes. Many designers create accessories with both shapes, especially jewelry and scarf prints. In that case look at the overall shape or feel.

Compare Accessory Shape To Your Face Shape

Compare the accessory shape to your face shape. Do they match?

If they match then you’re like me and have felt what looks best. However if they don’t match, then you’re like most women and designers. Look for the accessories that match your face shape and put on each item. Now think about the accessory shape and ask yourself, which makes you feel the lightest?
