What To Wear -- INC Sequin Pant Outfit

What to wear on New Year’s Eve: sequins!! I know many are saying “I’m not going anywhere because of Covid-19.” But why not dress for yourself and celebrate the New Year? When it comes right down to it we should always be dressing for yourselves because we can tap into our confidence and personal power.

This outfit is brought to you by INC, a Macy’s private brand: nude sequin wide-leg pants, nude crop cardigan sweater, wrap sleeveless top and gold necklace. (Macy.com: CULPOS X INC Sequin Wide-Leg Pants; INC Crop Cardigan Sweater; INC Wrap Sleeveless Top (out of stock); INC Navette Statement Necklace)

I divided the section into the five different Body Elements plus Scale Strategy:

  • Body Shape
  • Face Shape
  • Color Skin Hair and Eyes
  • Body Proportion
  • Body Frame Size
  • Scale Strategy

What To Wear For Body Shape

Body Shape gives you clues to the silhouette of the clothes and placement of horizontal and vertical lines. To review the different Body Shapes and the clues they give go to What Are Your Body Shape Clues.

Silhouette

The silhouette of the pant, cardigan and top is angular. Remember I told you in earlier posts that most silhouettes of clothes in the ready-to-wear market are angular. If you have a curved body shape, you will need to ask your tailor/seamstress if they can alter sequin pants with an angular silhouette to fit you. I know it sucks to have a curvy body in an angular body world because all the cute pants are for angular bodies. This is why I keep sewing my clothes.

Horizontal Lines

There is really only one major horizontal line and that’s at the waist. This placement is great for “H,” “V,” “A,” “S” and “X” Body Shapes. The horizontal line created by the sleeves point to the hips. If you have an “A” Body Shape, you can push the sleeves up a little so the horizontal line is at the waist or somewhere between the waist and hips.

If you don’t want attention at your waist, look for a cardigan that is longer and a top that can be untucked to bring the horizontal line down between the waist and hips.

There are minor horizontal lines created by the cardigan sleeves. They create horizontal lines at the hips which can be problematic for “A” Body Shapes. If this is you, push up the sleeves somewhere between the waist and hips.

In my younger days this was a problem for me. But the bigger problem was I didn’t like the feel of 3/4 length sleeves. So I had to balance out the feel of having horizontal lines pointing at my hips and my dislike of 3/4 length sleeves. The whole purpose of determining the placement of horizontal lines allows us to tap into our confidence and personal power, so determine which placement is best for you. For me, it is having the horizontal lines created by my sleeves point at my hips.

Vertical Lines

Vertical lines are created by the faux wrap top and cardigan sweater which are great for “V” Body Shapes. If the cardigan and top horizontal lines are moved to between the waist and hips, then the vertical lines would work for “O” Body Shapes too.

What To Wear For Face Shape

Face Shape gives you clues as to the shape of:

  • Inside design line details
  • Prints
  • Accessories

To review the different Face Shapes and the clues they give go to How To Keep Your Feet From Resembling Olive Oyl’s Feet.

The neckline has a “V” shape with both angular and curved shapes. It’s curved from the strap down over the bust to an angular point. Since it’s both angular and curved you will need to try it on to determine if wearing both shapes works for you.

I do well with both shapes because my face has both in it. My basic face shape is angular but my jawline has some curve to it. However, if I want to totally tap into my confidence I stick to purely angular necklines.

The necklace is the same way: it’s both curved and angular. The points create the angles. You need to determine what works for you.

What To Wear For Color Skin, Hair And Eyes

The color of your skin hair and eyes give you clues to:

  • Colors
  • Color combinations
  • The scale of prints and accessories

The main color in this outfit is copper. It lies between the orange and red/orange spoke of the color wheel. There are some women who shine in this color like my sister. If this color isn’t for your but you like the outfit, it also comes in a dark blue.

Paired with a light cream blouse a monochromatic color combination is created with a medium Color Contrast Profile.

What I love about this outfit with its simple use of color is the texture: the shiny texture from the sequins, the matt texture of the sweater and the in between texture from the blouse.

Play around with textures to create depth and interest, for example:

  • Silky and matt
  • Leather and matt
  • Lace and silky

These combinations are also great to use with any color combination.

The necklace has a gold color which ties the whole outfit together. If you like rose gold better it would work great with this outfit too.

What To Wear For Body Proportion

The clues Body Proportion gives you are:

  • Placement of horizontal and vertical lines
  • The second clue to scale of prints and accessories

To review Body Proportion and the clues it gives you go to Body Proportions — Out Of Balance?

There are three horizontal lines created by this outfit that affect Body Proportion:

  • Necklace between the chin and bust
  • Cardigan hem and pants waist at the waist
  • Sleeve hems of cardigan at the hip

The necklace is big enough to create two horizontal lines cutting this area. If your Body Proportions are long or the same in this area, this necklace is perfect for you. However if you’re short, choose a necklace with a small chain and pendant or don’t wear one at all.

Having a horizontal line at the waist is problematic for women who are short between the bust and waist. I recommend wearing pants with waistbands hitting at your belly button or about an inch below it. This will create the illusion of a longer bust to waist area. Another option is finding a blouse and cardigan with hems that hit somewhere between the waist and hips.

Full length sleeves can be problematic for women who are short between the waist and crotch. An option is to move them up close to the waist area.

With the pant legs being wide-leg, they create vertical lines from the crotch to the floor. This vertical line is perfect for those who have shorter legs compared to their torsos. Full length wide-leg pants create the appearance of added length.

What To Wear For Body Frame Size

Body Frame Size gives you the third clue for scale of prints and accessories. To review this Body Element and the clues it gives you go to Body Frame Size — Bone Size Clue.

To determine if the scale of the necklace is right for you go to the section below.

What To Wear For Scale Strategy

Scale Strategy is determined by bringing together the scale clues from:

  • Color Skin, Hair and Eyes
  • Body Proportion
  • Body Frame Size

To review or determine your Scale Strategy go to Scale Strategy — Bringing It Together

The only scale to consider in this outfit is the necklace. It has medium to medium/large scale. If your Scale Strategy is larger or smaller than this necklace, look for a necklace that has a scale matching yours.

Summary

Pant

This INC high rise, sequin pants have an angular silhouette with a horizontal line at the waist. The copper color is between the orange and red/orange spokes of the color wheel (it also comes in a navy blue). Long (31” inseam) wide-legged pants create the appearance of more length, which is great for those with shorter legs compared to their torsos. Finally the sequins add texture to the overall outfit.

Cardigan

The INC Cropped Cardigan has the same copper color as the INC Sequin Pants. Its hem creates a horizontal line at the waist. When the sleeve hems are full length they create horizontal lines at the hips. However they can be moved to the waist by pushing the sleeves up to the elbows. The center front opening creates a vertical line creating length between the shoulders and waist.

Blouse

This INC wrap sleeveless top is a bodysuit and has a design line at the waist creating a horizontal line there. Its V-neck shape has both curved and angular lines. The color is cream creating an overall monochromatic color scheme with medium color contrast.

Necklace

Like the blouse, the necklace has both curved and angular design lines. It’s gold in color and has a medium to medium/large scale.

Remember if any part of this outfit doesn’t work for you, use it as an inspiration and replace any pieces with ones that work for your body; by doing that you can start off the New Year feeling your confidence and power. You will be Wearing Your Greatness!
