What To Wear To Bed -- Sam

What To Wear To Bed — Sam

Over the last year, Sam learned how important it is to wear the right design lines and colors, so she’s applying her knowledge to what to wear to bed. She understands good habits and knows sleep is an important component of good health. What will happen if she wears the right design lines and colors to bed? Will she sleep better?

Sam and her friends: Monica, Alice, Grace and Veronica decided to conduct an experiment to find the answer so they’re each buying a new nightgown or pajamas. Normally, Sam wears an old t-shirt and shorts to lounge around in and to bed. She wondered if lounging and sleeping in clothes that match her body’s clues would really make a difference.

What To Wear To Bed -- Short Robe

What To Wear To Bed -- Sam Robe

When looking for night clothes in the Intimate Apparel department, Sam gravitated to Alfani because she loved the softness of them. She knew she wanted pants and a top so she could lounge around in them at night and in the morning. This wrap or robe caught her eye first. She loved the charcoal gray and thought it would be perfect to lounge around in.

Design Line & Color Analysis

Silhouette

Over this past year, Sam has learned that the silhouette of an outfit is important. It follows the outside lines of one’s body. It comes in two categories: angular and curved. In the angular category, the shoulders, waist and hips appear to have the same width. While in the curved category, the waist is significantly smaller than both the shoulders and hips. Also, Sam’s Body Shape gives her clues as to which category is the right one for her. Body Shapes have the same two categories.

Sam has an H Body Shape which is in the angular category, meaning she should wear clothes that have an angular silhouette.

Sam looked at the side seams of this wrap and saw that they were straight. This means the silhouette is angular, which is perfect for her.

Horizontal Lines

During this last year, Sam learned that horizontal lines stop the eye, emphasize the area and make it appear wider and shorter. Her Body Shape and Body Proportions give her clues as to the placement of these design lines.

For Body Shape, one doesn’t want horizontal lines in one’s widest area because they’ll emphasize the area and make it appear wider. But one does want them in a thinner area because they’ll emphasize it and make it appear wider, creating balance with the wider area.

For Body Proportions, one doesn’t want horizontal lines in short areas because they’ll make these areas appear shorter. On the other hand, one does want horizontal lines in long areas because they’ll make these areas appear shorter, creating balance.

Sam doesn’t have to worry about horizontal lines for her Body Shape because she doesn’t have a wide area: the shoulders, waist and hips all appear to be the same width. However, she does need to consider her Body Proportions. She is short between her chin and bust, and long between her waist and crotch. As a result, she wants to avoid them between her chin/bust and wants them between her waist/crotch.

This wrap only has horizontal lines created by the hems of the sleeves and body which are at or below her crotch. This is perfect for the area between her chin/bust, but not between her waist/crotch. She plans to remedy this by making sure the top of the pajamas’ hem lands in this area.

Vertical Lines

Along with learning about horizontal design lines, Sam learned that vertical design lines move her eye up and down and make the area appear thinner and longer. Her Body Shape and Body Proportions give her clues as to the placement of these design lines.

For Body Shape, one should put vertical lines in one’s widest area to move the eye away from this area and make it appear thinner. On the other hand, one should avoid placing them in just one’s thinnest area because they’ll make the area appear even thinner and make the wider area appear even wider.

For Body Proportions, one should put vertical lines in one’s short areas to make these areas appear longer; but avoid placing them in long areas because they’ll make these areas appear even longer and more out of proportion.

Since Sam has an H Body Shape, she doesn’t have to worry about vertical design lines because she doesn’t have a wide area. She does need to consider her Body Proportions though. She is short between her chin/bust so she wants them in this area. But because she is long between her waist/crotch, she doesn’t want them in this area.

The main vertical design line on this wrap is the center front opening. It goes from the shoulders down to the hem at the crotch and below. Because Sam’s torso and legs are the same length, this vertical line works for her. However, as noted in the Horizontal Line section, having a horizontal line between her waist and crotch would create better overall balance.

Shape Of Design Lines

Another interesting bit of information Sam learned this last year is that her Face Shape gives her clues as to the shape of design lines. Face Shapes come in two categories: angular and curved. Angular Face Shapes should wear angular design lines, and curved Face Shapes should wear curved design lines.

Sam has an oval Face Shape that falls into the curved category so she should look for necklines, pockets, plackets, accessories and prints with curved lines.

This wrap has both angular and curved design lines. The hem is curved while the pockets and center front opening/hem transitions. Not ideal, but when it comes to design line shapes, it might be hard to find the right ones with the right horizontal and vertical design lines too.

Color

Based on her Color of Skin, Hair and Eyes, Sam learned that a charcoal gray is a great neutral for her, which is one of the reasons she was attracted to this wrap and pajama set.

What To Wear To Bed -- Top & Shorts Pajama Set

After finding the wrap, Sam looked for pajamas that matched it. She found this pajama set. When sleeping at night she likes short sets because she gets warm easily. It would also be great to lounge around during the summer months in the Sacramento area.

Design Line & Color Analysis

Silhouette

Sam looked at the side seam under the armpit and noted that it was straight and then determined that this pajama set top has an angular silhouette. The bottoms have an elastic waist which means it could accommodate either an angular or curved body shape. She determined that the set’s silhouette is perfect for her.

Horizontal Lines

Next Sam looked for horizontal design lines. She saw that the sleeve and shorts hems have double horizontal lines created by the design line details. There’s also horizontal lines created by a patch pocket over her left breast and the hem of the top.

She knows that her Body Shape can handle any placement of horizontal design lines so she analyzed them for her Body Proportions. She is short between her chin/bust and determined that the sleeve hems hit her below her bust, which is perfect for her. The patch pocket is also at her bust line and works for her. Because she is long between her waist/crotch, she wants horizontal lines in this area and the top hem lands here. Finally, her torso and legs are the same length which means she can wear any length of shorts. Overall the horizontal design lines on this pajama set are perfect for her.

Vertical Lines

Next Sam looked for vertical design lines. She found several: the v-neckline, with a center front opening flowing into it and the lapel. These are all great places for them because she is short between her chin/bust. They create length in this area, which is also one of the main reasons she picked the set. All the others had crew necklines which makes this area appear even shorter.

Shape Of Design Lines

One of the balancing acts Sam has to do for design lines is the fact that she needs length between her chin/bust and curved design lines. Most vertical design lines in this area are angular. In this top’s case, it’s the v-neckline and lapels. This top also has another angular design line at the center front hem. It has a right angle.

Sam learned that she can counterbalance these angular design lines with a curved print. So she looked for curved prints that match the wrap. This print is curved and the colors work perfect for her and the wrap. Problem solved.

Color

Sam learned that the Color of her Skin, Hair and Eyes give her clues as to the relative lightness and darkness of a print. She has light skin and dark hair which means she has a high color contrast profile. This means she can wear light and dark colors. The print in this pajama set is light and dark in the neutral family, which is perfect for her.

What To Wear To Bed -- Pajama Pants

There are times when Sam likes wearing long pants. In the summer months, that time is in the morning. She gets up early before everyone with a cup of coffee and plans out her day. These jogger pajama pants are perfect to lounge around on cooler mornings.

Design Line & Color Analysis

Silhouette

Like the above shorts, these jogger pajama pants have an elastic waistband which can accommodate both angular and curved Body Shapes. As a result, Sam knows they’ll work for her.

Horizontal Lines

The only horizontal lines Sam found were at the waist, which will be hidden by the top, and at the hem band. She knows she can put horizontal lines anywhere in her leg area because her torso and legs are the same length.

Final Thoughts

Sam never thought what she wore to bed or lounged in could make a difference in how she felt. But she’s learned that it makes a big difference in how she feels in her everyday life. By wearing pajamas and robes with design lines and colors that match her body’s clues, she keeps that feeling of confidence in everything she does. As a result, she did sleep better because she kept that feeling of confidence.

In the next blog post, Monica will share the night clothes she picked. Like Sam, she was surprised by the fact that wearing night clothes that match her body’s clues changed how she slept. The post is called: What To Wear To Bed — Monica.
