What To Wear To Bed -- Sleep Shirt

What To Wear To Bed -- Veronica Night Shirt

When looking for a pajama top, Veronica didn’t like what she was seeing because all of the hems stopped at her hips. She wanted one that stopped at her upper thighs because it would lengthen her torso. This is one trick she learned over the past year. She thought this night shirt would work.

Design Line & Color Analysis

Silhouette

Over this last year, Veronica learned that the silhouette is an important design line to consider. It’s the outside line of an outfit. This line is the difference between her shoulders/waist, waist/hips and hips/shoulders. It comes in two categories: angular and curved. In the angular category, the shoulders, waist and hips all appear to be the same width. In the curved category, the waist is significantly smaller than both the shoulders and the hips.

Her body shape gives her clues as to which category she lands in, which is the curvy category. As a result, she should look for clothes with curvy silhouettes.

When looking at the night shirt, the hips are wider because it has an A-line flare. The silhouette works perfectly for Veronica’s silhouette.

Horizontal Lines

Veronica learned that horizontal lines stop the eye, emphasize the area and make it appear wider and shorter. Her Body Shape and Body Proportions give her clues as to the placement of these design lines. For her Body Shape, she can place horizontal lines anywhere because she doesn’t have one area wider than the rest like Monica, Alice and Grace. However, she does need to consider her Body Proportions.

Veronica is short between her bust/waist and waist/crotch. She is long between her crotch/knees and knees/floor. In short, her torso is significantly shorter than her legs. This fact has been a problem for her. She never knew what to do to create balance. As a result, she always felt out of balance. Now she knows the placement of horizontal design lines is one part of the equation to create better balance.

Veronica wants to place very few horizontal lines in her torso area and place most of them in her leg area. This night shirt has two horizontal lines: the hem of the sleeve and body of the shirt. The sleeve hem is at her bust line, which is the best place to have a horizontal line if there needs to be one. This is because the area between her chin/bust is the same as her ideal body proportion. The body of the shirt hem is mid-thigh. This is perfect because the horizontal line is in the leg area, helping it to appear shorter.

Vertical Lines

Veronica learned that vertical lines move the eye up and down and make the area appear thinner and taller. Her Body Shape and Body Proportions give her clues as to the placement of these design lines. As with horizontal lines, she can place vertical lines anywhere for her Body Shape and for the same reasons. Also like with horizontal lines, she needs to be strategic in placing vertical design lines.

Veronica wants vertical lines in her torso area because they’ll help this area appear longer. She wants to limit them in the leg area because she doesn’t want this area to appear longer. By being strategic in placing horizontal and vertical design lines, she can create the balance she’s been missing.

The night shirt has only two vertical lines, both created by the v-neckline. This is only in the area between her chin/bust. But where she really wants them is between her bust/crotch. She looked for one with a center front seam line but couldn’t find one.

Shape Of Design Lines

Another design detail Veronica learned about is the shape of design lines. They also come in two categories: angular and curved. Design line shapes can be found in the neckline, pockets and collars to name a few. Also one can find design lines shapes in prints.

Veronica’s Face Shape gives her clues as to which category she should wear. She has a heart Face Shape which falls into the curved category.

The only design line shape that can be found in the night shirt is the neckline. It’s both curved and angular. The neckline has a V shape. The point creates an angular shape. However, the area between the shoulder and the point is curved. Veronica wants the length this neckline gives her so she can live with the angular point.

What To Wear To Bed -- Pajama Bottoms

After finding the night shirt, Veronica looked for pajama bottoms. With fall coming, she needs the warmth they give her. She looked for ones with a jogger fit.

Design Line & Color Analysis

Silhouette

The pajama bottoms have an elastic waist and tie which means they’ll fit Veronica’s curvy silhouette. She looks for a pair that fit her hips. This bottom is perfect for her silhouette.

Horizontal Lines

The pajama bottoms have an elastic waist and tie which means they’ll fit Veronica’s curvy silhouette. She looks for a pair that fit her hips. This bottom is perfect for her silhouette.

Shape Of Design Lines

The pants have a poke-a-dot print. Veronica loves poke-a-dots; they make her feel happy for some reason. She also knows this print is perfect for her because it matches the clue her curved Face Shape gives her.

Color

Veronica’s coloring, the difference between the color of her Skin, Hair and Eyes, gives her the clue to the relative lightness and darkness of colors. They give her the clue; showing her that she should wear low contrast.

The print on the pants, light gray and black, has a contrast of medium/high. This doesn’t match her body’s clues. However, because it’s away from her face and the fact that its horizontal lines and print shape are perfect for her, Veronica will live with it. When she puts on both the night shirt and pants she feels good. She knows not every element can be perfect every time. She makes sure the major components work.

Scale

Finally, Veronica learned that the combination of the coloring, Body Proportions and Body Frame Size give her the clue as to the scale of prints. Her coloring and Body Frame Size give her the overall scale size of small and she’ll adjust it for her Body Proportions in each area. Her overall scale is small, but because her Body Proportion is long in her leg area, the scale can increase to medium.

The scale of the poke-a-dots is small/medium which reflects her body’s clues.

Final Thoughts

Veronica has learned, when she considers her body’s clues as to the right design lines and colors for her, she can create a sense of balance. She also knows in most cases she won’t be able to implement all the clues. However, she can get most of them, which is when the magic happens because she feels balanced and able to tap into her confidence and personal power. She’ll keep a look out for clothes with the right design lines and colors for her, and she’ll purchase them without regard to their being on sale or not.

With fall coming, the friends are looking for new clothes to add to their closets. Over this past year, they’re slowly created their dream clothes: a closet full of clothes they love to wear and the right clothes have helped them tap into their confidence and personal power. In the next post, Sam will share what she found. It’s called: What To Wear This Fall — Sam.
